The quality of Vietnam health care system has improved dramatically in recent years, with significant progress being made in the rates of life expectancy and child mortality, in particular. Improvement in healthcare provision remains, however, a crucial element of the government’s legislative reforms.
As a developing country, Vietnam is in the process of improving its healthcare system and has made great efforts in implementing health financing reforms.
Under the current healthcare system payments are made into the national Health Insurance Fund on both a compulsory and a voluntary basis, and the system is very complicated, with different groups of people receiving varying amounts of healthcare subsidy.
Foreign employees in Vietnam (contracted for three months or longer) are liable to pay contributions towards the national Health Insurance Fund.
State health insurance entitles foreigners to register to use a public hospital. However, charges for (subsidised) medicine and more complex procedures should be expected, even at public hospitals. As a result, most foreigners choose to purchase private health insurance from one of the many providers in the country, which allows for different gradients of access and coverage by private clinics and hospitals.
About hospitals: Many people living in provinces choose to travel to urban centres for any major treatment.
Big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City each have at least one state-owned hospital that caters to foreigners. Both cities now have private clinics and hospitals that employ local and foreign doctors. These locations provide everything from ambulance services to pre-natal care.
About pharmacies:
Pharmacies in the major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can be found in most shopping malls, they are generally well-stocked and it is possible to buy medicine over the counter without a prescription. These high-street pharmacies are not subject to stringent regulations, however, and it is advisable to read the expiry date on any medications bought. Many of the private hospitals and clinics have a 24-hour pharmacy.
