(Vietnam Package Tours) On 4/7, Nguyen Huu Hoai, Chairman of Quang Binh province, said at the 39th session, in Bonn (Germany), Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park was recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage 2nd.

This time, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Heritage shortlisted 2nd world based on two criteria in particular, outstanding examples representing ecological processes in the evolution and development of the system terrestrial habitats (criteria IX); owned natural habitat most significant for biodiversity conservation (criteria X).

Phong Nha – Ke Bang is also known as  oldest and largest tectonic Karst areas in Asia offers a wealth of evidence about the historical period of geological formation of the earth’s crust with caves, rich and diverse underground rivers .

At the meeting, this time, World Heritage Committee also approved expanding the national park from 85.754 ha area to 123.326 ha. Phong Nha – Ke Bang humid tropical forest is still relatively intact with large coverage in limestone ranges, with over 2.934 species of vascular plants and over 800 vertebrate species, including many species in the Red List of Organizations Nature Conservation and IUCN exists only in some places in the world. The degree of endemism in the region is determined to be high with over 400 species of Vietnam and 38 animals of the Truong Son range.

The events that National Park Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park was recognized under the new criteria of the World Natural Heritage is an honor not only for Quang Binh province, but also for the country of Vietnam.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park was established in 2001 and in 2003 at the 27th session, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO entitled it as World Natural Heritage for the first time, according to the criteria VIII with outstanding value in geology and Geo-morphology.
