Can Cau is a busy weekly market held in Si Ma Cai District of Lao Cai in every Saturday. Located just mile from the border between Vietnam - China border, it take people a great effort to get there. Even though, this market attract thousands of people travel there to trade, to meet, and to look for love-mate. There are some groups of minority ethnic people gather at this market, like Red Hmong, Nung, Phu La and even Chinese people from across the border. All kinds of goods are traded here, from fabrics to various types of livestock to the powerful local corn wine. The Kinh (the majority group in Vietnam) far from the Red river Delta also come there for good buffaloes as it is the merchandise this market is most famous for. There will be a large section for buffalo trading alone, where you can find buffaloes from variety of type and size.
ITINERARY
You may not like to miss the best part of this market, so early departure is highly recommended as the market start as 7.30 am and closes in the early afternoon.

Arrive in the market after a drive of 125 km (3 hours from Sapa) you will reach Can Cau Market. Join the exciting atmosphere there by wandering around, taking photos, haggling with the traders over some stock, even try some dishes there or clear your palate by some shot of strong corn wine (it is really strong)
After the market, travel to Bac Ha town to have lunch in a local restaurant where will offer you a wide range of local cuisine. After lunch, drive to Ban Pho village and take a short walk around where residences of the Red Hmong, Tay and Nung minorities, see the locals making corn wine in their houses, ready for the Bac Ha market on Sunday. End the afternoon with a visit to the house of Mr. Ho, a local Hmong man who performs traditional music, dance and story telling. Drive back to Sapa. End of the service.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE THE TOUR
- When you start the walk from Sapa town to the villages, there will be some local ethnic people walking with you. Their purpose is to sell you their handicrafts such as: brocaded Purse, scarfs... which they carry along with their basket on their back. It is to remind you that this is quite usual in Sapa and it happens to all every travelers. In some hard walking routes through the rice fields on the wet days, these locals are willing to aid you with the walking route if you are in a need. If you need their help, you can say thanks to them at the end of the tour by buying their souvenir or give them a small tip. As it is unavoidable fact in Sapa, you'd better know about it before hand.
- Should you buy any gifts for local kids in the villages? This is not our recommendations. For the kids or adults in the villages you are visiting, giving candies, gifts or money when you pass or visit are not really good as then kids can quit school and adults can stopped the field work just to stay at the village waiting for tourists to pass by to ask for money and gift. For a sustainable tourism, we suggest that you should not. If you would like to donate for the villages here, there are couple of NGO funds those collect and support the remote villages.
- Should I tip the guide at the end of the tour? Only-When you are satisfied with the tour guide services, tipping is waited by the guide as the appreciation of the guide's work. Proper tip for Sapa Local tour guide is around 10$-15$/day but this vary depending on each tourist tipping culture and enjoyment of the tour. Tipping is not included in our tour quotations.
